A road closes. When does the car find out?

Not “if.” When.

Between the decision to close a road and the moment a vehicle can act on it, the information passes through several systems: the traffic management center, a backend platform, the roadside unit, and finally the on-board unit.

Each step takes time. Operator validation, message encoding, backhaul, broadcast scheduling, on-board processing. None of them looks serious on its own. Together, they decide whether a warning arrives while it still matters.

Timing also cuts both ways. A closure that reaches the vehicle late is a missed warning. A closure that has already been lifted but is still being delivered is a misleading one. Freshness, meaning when information becomes valid and when it expires, matters as much as speed.

As C-V2X and C-ITS deployments mature across the U.S. and Europe, the conversation is shifting from coverage to timeliness: how quickly, how consistently, and how predictably road events reach vehicles.

That is where RSUs and OBUs become more than just communication endpoints. They are critical links in the chain, where message lifetime is respected and delivery has to be dependable. At Unex, that is the part we build: V2X roadside and on-board units designed so information reaches the vehicle reliably, and still in time to be useful.

A warning that arrives late is just a report.
